Fairy Tales Do Not Come True on Their Own

The answer to the question at the end of the previous chapter is exactly why we are creating The Ellipsis Foundation.

Another path will not appear on its own. It is not enough to imagine a world in which people say goodbye differently, preserve memory differently and think differently about the place they will leave behind. For that possibility to exist, it must be researched, designed, tested and, finally, built.

We will explore new forms of farewell, burial and remembrance, the possibility of making important decisions while still alive, ways of preserving a person’s real voice and story, as well as memory technologies and the ethical boundaries of their use. But research is only the beginning. It must become something that one day can be seen, visited and chosen.

That is why one of the main goals of The Ellipsis Foundation is to build real gardens and parks of memory. Not cemeteries that city life seems to leave beyond its boundaries, but public spaces where memory becomes part of life itself. Places where people can remember someone they loved while also walking, meeting, reading, exercising, watching trees grow and seeing new blossoms return every spring.

We want ideas to become projects, and projects to become real places. We want the first park to stop existing only on a screen or an architect’s drawing, for its gates to open, its trees to grow and people to walk its paths.

But if we intend to change not only a space, but an entire culture around death, who gave us the right to decide on our own what it should become?

The answer to the question at the end of the previous chapter is exactly why we are creating The Ellipsis Foundation.
